I originally wanted to release my first audiobook both digitally and on CD. However, as most of us living in the digital age know, the CD is a dying medium. Digital music sales surpassed the sale of physical CDs in 2011, and the CD continues to lose ground while digital sales increase by 10% per year. This is similar to how ebook sales overtook print books sales on Amazon in 2012.
Furthermore, I’m having a difficult time finding a publisher who wants to deal with CDs. Even if I do find one, out of the big three audiobook distributors – Amazon, iTunes and Audible – only Amazon deals with physical CDs. Many large record companies are also abandoning this media in 2012 and switching entirely to the digital market. It seems that the era of the CD is truly coming to an end.
If I don’t find a publisher that do CDs I’m still going to create a few jewel-cased ones with a drop-ship company. But it will be as limited edition items only and they won’t appear in any stores. I may use them as exclusive rewards for the Kickstarter projects I plan on launching later on.
Here is my initial CD design art for the audio edition of HOS.
