I’m happy to announce that Siforia has now published two synthetic audiobooks, the first of their kind. One is titled How to Build a Profitable Online Business and is the audio edition of the Build a Profitable Online Business book (previously named Handbook of Web Business). The second audiobook is titled How to Achieve Success, Happiness and Quality of Life and is the audio edition of the Handbook of Success.
Although the physical CD edition is not published yet, you can see renderings of the CD artwork here below.
I had to change the titles slightly compared with the other editions in order to get Amazon, iTunes and Audible to accept them. Since Audible has a monopoly on the audiobooks category for Amazon and iTunes, which is difficult to get into, I instead published my works in the Spoken Word category, which required the name change. This is a common technique used by audiobook self-publishers to bypass the monopoly. Another reason for the category change is that Audible does not accept synthetic works on principle, though I suspect they would not be able to detect that easily.
The works are distributed through CDBaby.com to more than 40 online retailers, including the largest four: Amazon, iTunes, Audible and Spotify. CDBaby is the Smashwords of audio publishing, which is to say they do not take ridiculously high set up fees and 30% royalty claim like some of the other distributors. CDBaby takes only 9% of the royalty paid by retailers, plus a $49 set up fee per album, which I gladly pay in order not to have to submit and manage individual accounts with all of the online audio retailers. CDBaby pays through PayPal whenever one’s account reaches a specified amount, which makes things very convenient.
Both of these audio titles are created using synthetic audio software from Acapela, as they have by far the highest quality, most human-like voices in the text-to-speech industry. As far as Acapela and I are aware, these are the first professionally produced synthetic audio books ever published. Although the audiobooks are synthetic, that’s not to say one can just push a button and create a ready-for-publish audiobook. It took me a week’s labor for each book in adjusting the pauses, pronunciations and making the text flow better in speech. All in order to create the very best synthetic audiobook possible. And the job was certainly worth it as this new format will no doubt help these titles reach an even greater audience.
